CYBER SENSUALITY 2016

Cyber Sensuality is an extension of my graduating thesis project Lookbook, 2014 that consisted of a wall installation with five books. The project uses graphic design as an art medium, and the internet as a tool to express, resolve, and manipulate ideas into an instantly gratifying aesthetic that enables a desired image of myself. My “life online” has been mostly spent “image crafting” my identity through blogs and social networking sites in the form of profile pictures and statuses. As a victim to this fixation, it has lead to a self conflict about my image as being catered to a voyeuristic audience. Each book installment in Cyber Sensuality will therefore investigate and indulge in this idea accompanied by posters, sculptures and installation pieces to create an interactive library platform.

The installations in Cyber Sensuality where the books will be displayed with, will reveal the page’s illustrated contents into 3D forms. Shelves and sculptures with ambiguous and minimal square shapes like pop-up ads, will be placed along the walls and floor space to further aid with the immediate aesthetic of the internet. By using flesh tones, and exposing contents of my books, the space/library becomes indulgent and almost perverted.

ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME

Bringing the internet into book forms will aid in dissecting the immediacy of the internet and bring inquiry to the digital and physical forms of communication. Since there will be multiple books for the viewers to access, the work becomes a reflection of the audience. For example, in Lookbook, 2014, a book entitled Me, Me, Me, Me, Me, Me, only consists of its cover page, which reminds us of the phrase, “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” where in this case, you have no choice but to judge it by its cover(s). It mimics the idea of a profile or “selfie” where all you get is what you see.

Creep

Creep, follows a narrative that eventually folds out into a chaotic mess. It is meant to replicate the time spent on the internet and how involved we are with other people’s lives to the point where we know too much about each other; starting off by “creeping” on my profile page. The graphics are ambiguous yet familiar and readable text is occasionally used to help bring focus to the shapes and forms of its content. This will eventually make the viewers aware of how we read and interact with familiar functional forms.
